It's ragged, tattered, torn, and stained. The pages are all wobbly looking from spills from where either I or my children knocked something over onto it. The binding is coming undone. And the cover page well... as the rest of it, it is in atrocious condition too! But I love, love, love this little cookbook! I guess everyone probably has a soft spot for those recipes that Mom, grandmas and aunts prepared for the family. I particularly love the old church cookbooks and and the goodwill circle cookbooks that were given to me by my Aunt Ethel years ago. I will not part with them because of two things. First of all because she gave them to me and some of her recipes are in those books. And secondly because there is so many simple, hearty and wonderful recipes within those pages. The cookbooks bring back lots of good memories of family gathered around a bountiful table and my aunt scurrying around in her kitchen. I can still see her in my mind's eye and it makes me smile as I recall! Oh how she loved to cook for the people she loved and cared for! And my goodness if "company was a comin'" she would have every pot, pan and dish in her huge country kitchen filled with good food! I have noticed that one of the things that I find is being searched for on my blog thru Google is my Aunt Ethel's Chicken Mull Recipe. Funny sounding name I know. And not too appetizing sounding either. But, gracious it IS yummy! It's sort of similar to Chicken 'N Dumplin's but not all doughy like dumplings can sometimes be. I LOVE it for hearty comfort food and it is one of the first dishes that I look forward to once there is a little nip in the air and it's time for the nesting thing to kick in! Nice, warm hearty food on a cool day and family gathered around and this southern lady is close to heaven on earth!

Oh, and to explain what a goodwill circle is, just in case some of you don't know. It is a group of ladies in a community or a church who would try to help meet the needs of families in their community or church. One of the ways involved baking or cooking. If there was a family where there was a sickness in the family and the lady of the house couldn't cook for a while or if there were a death in the family the ladies would take prepared foods to the family, so that the grieving family wouldn't have to worry about cooking during that time. They would also take food to new members and families of the community to welcome them. Bake sales were held to help raise money for different causes. Well truthfully, most everything in the south revolves around food! Southern ladies are all about being neighborly and hospitality and good food certainly do go hand in hand with being neighborly!

When I am out and about looking for vintage finds I always try to go thru the books and that I come across. Sometimes I luck up and find some vintage cookbooks too.

I love to find southern themed recipe books like this Aunt Bee's Mayberry Cookbook!

Granny's Muffin House cook book at the heading of this post is a wonderful collection of muffin recipes.
I LOVE muffins, don't you? And this book has all kinds of great muffin recipes!

And who can resist chocolate cakes, pies, candies, cookies and other chocolate goodies? This collectible Hershey's Chocolate Cookbook has some wonderful recipes for the chocoholic!

And this one is titled Chocolate Fantasies.....sounds good to me, but sort of sinful sounding don't you think? And the recipes....mmmmmm!
